• Allergy Awareness Assembly in School

  This week in assembly, the children learned about **Benedict’s Law**, which was introduced following the tragic loss of a young boy, Benedict Blythe, who suffered a fatal allergic reaction. The aim of the law is to raise awareness of severe allergies and help everyone understand how to keep people with allergies safe.

  ​

  We discussed:

  **The 14 main allergens** that can cause allergic reactions, including nuts, peanuts, milk, eggs, wheat, soya, fish, shellfish, sesame, mustard, celery, lupin, sulphur dioxide and molluscs.

  ​

  🚨 **What anaphylaxis is** and how to recognise the signs of a severe allergic reaction. Children learned that symptoms can include:

  *   Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  ​
  *   Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat
  ​
  *   Feeling dizzy or faint
  ​
  *   A sudden rash or hives
  ​
  *   Becoming very unwell very quickly
  *   ​
      

  🤝 **Why we must never share food in school.** Even a small amount of an allergen can make someone with a severe allergy extremely poorly. Children were reminded that sharing snacks, lunches or treats can be dangerous.

  🥜 **Being a Nut Aware School.** We talked about the importance of helping to keep our school safe for everyone by not bringing nut-based products into school where possible and being mindful of the foods we send in packed lunches.

  We were extremely proud of how thoughtfully the children engaged with this important topic. By learning about allergies and understanding how to keep each other safe, we are helping to create a caring and inclusive school community where everyone can learn and thrive.
