Social, Emotional and Mental Health

Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs are defined in the 'Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice: 0-25 years' as:

"Becoming withdrawn or isolated, as well as displaying challenging, disruptive or disturbing behaviour. These behaviours may reflect underlying mental health difficulties such as anxiety or depression, self-harming, substance misuse, eating disorders or physical symptoms that are medically unexplained. Other children and young people may have disorders such as attention deficit disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder or attachment disorder"

Some pupils may need support with:

  • Attention and listening skills
  • Low self-esteem
  • Managing anger
  • Forming and maintaining relationships
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Self-Harm
  • Bereavement

In our school pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH) are supported in a variety of ways:

  • Behaviour support
  • Pastoral support and guidance from a key member of staff
  • Intervention groups
  • Outside agency intervention (such as City of Birmingham School)
  • Signposting to Forward Thinking Birmingham and PAUSE
  • Inclusion Lead Nicola Hadley has completed Mental Health First Aid training which can be used to support pupils in school.
