In our class we do lots of our learning through hands on play. We work on objectives from the EYFS Development Matters Document and our Individual EHC Plans.
Our learning is linked to the topic we are focusing on and books that we enjoy as a class.
We work on fine motor activities daily to help strengthen and coordinate our small muscles. Our hands and eyes work together to complete a variety of tasks. This helps improve our concentration and ultimately our ability to copy and write independently.
We are developing our language skills by taking part in phonics sessions and lessons based around key books. We use the books we share to help us build our vocabulary, use our imaginations, sequence events and write for ourselves.
During numeracy lessons the children's understanding is supported by the use of symbols, manipulatives and hands on practical activities. We spend lots of time building our understanding of numbers and counting. We also work with shape, measures, time and sorting.
Speech and Language
We have 2 daily speech and language groups. A vocabulary group that uses a Word Aware approach and a listening group that follows a plan devised by our school speech and language therapist.
We also all have individual speech and language targets that are addressed through 1:1 daily learning sessions with trained staff.
Our Topic changes regularly and is determined by the children's interests. We use our topic to choose books that we will focus on and plan activities such as art, music, exploring our world and cooking. Our current topic is Celebrations.
We have daily access to our school sensory room which the children enjoy spending time in. We also incorporate multi-sensory approaches into all of our learning.
Sensory tools/toys, activities and approaches are beneficial for building understanding, vocabulary, regulating emotions and providing feedback to our bodies to help us concentrate.
We often incorporate specific sensory approaches for individual children based on their needs and advice from specialists.
Our PE sessions are planned using the EYFS Development Matters, The National Curriculum and The Smart Moves Programme. Activities are differentiated to meet each child's physical and developmental needs. We also spend time working individually with children on an individual exercise plan to work on targets that they have been given by Occupational Therapists.
Outdoor Learning and Gardening
We are fortunate to be able to learn about the environment through our Outdoor Learning. We love being outdoors and will often put our wellies and coats to explore the weather, changing seasons, creatures and plants. We head outdoors at least once a week and enjoy looking after our environment.
We complete lots of life skills activities regularly to help us gain independence and prepare us for life in the real world.
